Gum Graft

If you feel that one or more of your teeth are longer than the others or seem to be moving, if you often bleed when you brush your teeth, or if you experience sensitivity to hot or cold, you may be suffering from gum recession or tooth loosening. Fortunately, this problem, which has both aesthetic and functional consequences, can be corrected with minor surgery performed by your dentist: a gum graft.

WHY HAVE A GUM GRAFT?

This type of procedure, performed by our dentists at Clinique Poirier, your dental center in Valleyfield, is designed to treat gum recession. Although this process is gradual, it can occur quickly, especially since its causes are varied:

  • Periodontal disease: This can lead to the destruction of periodontal tissue and thus affect the strength of the teeth.
  • Poor brushing technique: Brushing too aggressively or improperly can damage the gums over time.
  • Thin gums: Gum thickness varies from person to person, but thinning can be caused by plaque buildup or gum infections.
  • Oral trauma: Blows to the mouth can weaken the periodontal support of the teeth.
  • Tongue or lip piercings: These can cause friction on the gums.

GUM GRAFTING, AN EASY AND LOW-RISK SOLUTION

During this minor surgery, performed under local anesthesia, a graft is applied to cover an exposed root, restore gum thickness, or both. This procedure is not usually very painful, but it does involve some manipulation, including the removal of a graft from the patient's palate. Although this is the most common option (using a graft from the patient), it is not the only one available; artificial grafts or grafts from a donor bank can also be used. In all cases, healing time is required for the graft to be successful.

THREE TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL GUM TRANSPLANT

  • Follow the recovery advice to the letter

To ensure the success of this safe and secure procedure, it is important to take the time to heal properly. That is why it is essential to follow the dentist's advice carefully and consult them if you experience any complications.

  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco

Alcohol and tobacco interfere with healing and are therefore prohibited for 24 to 48 hours after a gum graft. In addition, their consumption increases the risk of developing periodontal disease.

  • Talk to your dentist about your fears

Gum grafting can cause some fear and anxiety. These feelings are normal, but it is important to share them with your treatment team so that they can calm your fears and make the procedure as simple and comfortable as possible!
