Bruxism

Even if teeth are strong and resistant, it is normal for them to wear down over time. Friction caused by chewing, among other things, contributes to the erosion of their surface. However, various ailments and conditions, as well as certain habits, whether intentional or not, can contribute to this wear and tear and even cause more severe damage. This is the case with bruxism, or teeth grinding during the night. Although it is difficult to stop completely, it is possible to control its damaging effects with a simple device available at the clinic: an occlusal splint.

WHAT IS BRUXISM?

Bruxism refers to the involuntary clenching of the jaws and teeth outside of periods of chewing and swallowing. While it can occur during the day or at night, the consequences are greater when it occurs during sleep, as it is impossible to control. This problem is thought to be caused by a disturbance in the systems that maintain regular sleep patterns. The causes of this imbalance are not always known. However, stress and anxiety are known to contribute to bruxism, whether it occurs during the day or at night.

OCCLUSAL PLATES FOR OPTIMAL TOOTH PROTECTION

As this is an involuntary reflex with psychosomatic causes, it is difficult to completely eliminate. However, wearing an occlusal plate at night can help prevent the many effects and consequences of bruxism:

  • Severe wear or even breakage of teeth, crowns, fillings, and dentures;
  • Enamel wear, causing increased tooth sensitivity;
  • Frequent and persistent headaches;
  • Tooth or jaw pain, mainly upon waking;
  • Poor sleep quality;
  • Noise that may disturb your partner's sleep;

When worn at night, an occlusal plate relaxes the jaw muscles while protecting the surface of the teeth from potential friction. This custom-made device is available at Clinique Poirier, your dental center in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield.

THREE TIPS FOR CONTROLLING BRUXISM AND ITS EFFECTS

  • Avoid sleep disturbances

In addition to reducing noise sources in the bedroom, it is recommended to avoid smoking or drinking alcohol in the evening. These factors disrupt sleep quality, which can increase muscle tension and, therefore, the reflexes that cause bruxism.

  • Control your sources of stress

While it is sometimes difficult to completely eliminate the causes of bruxism, it is possible to control some sources or reduce its effects. Regular physical activity and relaxation exercises can help.

  • Talk to your dentist about bruxism

If you think you suffer from bruxism, talk to your dentist. They will be able to advise you on the best possible solution, such as wearing a mouth guard. Not only does this protect your teeth from wear and tear, it also helps relax your jaw.
